Machine brands and software

SCM Group is the Italian parent of Morbidelli and of the Xilog Plus programming environment. Machines sold under several names in the group share one program format, which is why a file written for one will often load on another.

Morbidelli is the SCM Group brand of CNC machining centres. Its programs are written in Xilog Plus as plain-text XXL, and on older controllers they have to be compiled to a binary PGM before the machine will load them.

Xilog Plus is SCM's programming environment for its machining centres. It writes .xxl, a plain-text program with one command per line, and it is the format almost every SCM part program starts life in.

Homag is the German machine builder whose machining centres are programmed in woodWOP. Its programs are .mpr files: plain text, readable, and organised as a header, a block of variables and then one block for each operation.

Weeke is a Homag Group brand of CNC machining centres, known in particular for boring and routing work. Its machines are programmed in woodWOP and load the same .mpr files as the rest of the group.

Brandt is a Homag Group brand, best known for edgebanding. It is worth being precise about what that means for file formats: an edgebander is not programmed with a part program the way a machining centre is, so woodWOP and MPR belong to the CNC processing centres in the group rather than to every machine carrying the name.

woodWOP is the programming software Homag supplies for its machining centres, and the .mpr file it writes is the part program those machines load. It is used across the group, so a program written in woodWOP is equally at home on a Homag, Weeke or Brandt processing centre.
